Top 25 Workers Comp Blog and AM Best Recommended Provider Awards

May 9, 2017 By JL Risk Management Consultants

Picked As Top 25 Workers Comp Blog – J&L Risk Management Awarded Twice This Week

J&L was awarded A Top 25 Workers Comp Blog and named as a recommended Provider by AM  Best this week.   Well, the AM Best award was actually in March and the Top 25 blog was earlier this month.  I am running a little behind in my mention of awards.

Wikipedia – Dreamy Pixel

The blog turned 10 years old this year.  The company actually celebrated our 22nd year consulting on Workers Compensation.

We at J&L and specifically myself want to thank Workerscompensation.com; the good souls that nominated us, and to the committee for ranking us 5th.  My blog elves and I have worked over 5,000 hours on the articles.   We even had to start with the 2007 articles and gussy them up a little over the last year.   Google likes  “the gussying.”

Awards sound great.  We had been picked as a Top 25 Workers Comp Blog in the past.

I just wanted to provide a great repository of articles that have an evergreen quality  or articles that stand the test of time.   You will see them being posted in LinkedIn and Twitter a few times each week.  The more we all share our Workers Comp and insurance knowledge, the more we can make WC a better place to work.

We were the first one to blog conference live and not just write articles each night.   I actually had to ice my wrists down each night from live blogging the WCRI Conference two months ago.

OK, so enough of this fluff, pomp, and circumstance, let us dig into another technical area of Workers Comp.   As always, if you have a question or want me to write about a certain subject, use the Contact Us page to send any suggestions.

By the way, many thanks to anyone that nominated us as a Top 25 Workers Comp Blog.

J&L Risk Management Consultants – Our 22nd Year – Thanks!!!

May 2, 2017 By JL Risk Management Consultants

J&L Risk Management Consultants Begins 22nd Year of Service

I started J&L Risk Management Consultants (originally called JLM Services) in 1995.  The old adage of “started on the kitchen table” applies to the 25 year plan created in one weekend with much hope and a large amount of coffee

We originally marketed to now defunct spinning mills in North Carolina’s heart of clothes manufacturing.   Those plants and mills have long since moved out of the United States.  J&L was left holding the bag on quite a few of our billings when we first began our journey.

The market spoke up to advise me there were many more services to offer than just claims handling and claims file review services.   With my  actuarial background, the spinning mill owners brought me their policies to explain to them how the insurance carriers charged for services.  Those same owners brought their premium audits as  most of them did not understand how the charges were being assessed at each premium audit.

They also brought their Experience Rating Sheets to see if the E-Mods were correct.  That was some time ago.

Thank You Graphic J&L Risk Management Consultants In Purple Background

I started the blog with an article on CompScreen(R) in 2007 after attending a conference in Atlanta on Social Media.   Our weekly newsletter soon followed in 2008.   Many article readers of mine asked that I put together the newsletter as a way to quickly read the articles without having to visit the website every day.   Once again, the market spoke up.

We have never placed any advertising ; charged anyone for premium content; or charged anyone to make copies of articles.   A backlink to the article, blog, or website paid the corporation/me well enough.

After publishing over  1,800 articles on the blog, we took on the task of trudging back into the past and correcting/spiffing up the articles.   We also removed a large number of notice-type and redundant articles.   A blog consultant painstakingly restructured many of the articles as they were originally scrambled  and added graphics to  “un-bore”  the blog – Thanks Erica!!!

Thanks to everyone for reading the articles, newsletter, and my articles that are reprinted in the blogosphere.   James J Moore  J&L Risk Management Consultants Inc.

J&L Risk Management Consultants – Cutcompcosts.com 20th Year!!!

March 4, 2015 By JL Risk Management Consultants

J&L Risk Management Consultants

I originally established J&L Risk Management Consultants, Inc. as  J&L Insurance Consultants, Inc  in 1996. In 1995, I called the company James J Moore, Risk Consultant for the first year.   J&L Insurance Consultants, Inc. morphed into J&L Risk Management Consultants Inc  as so many people were calling for insurance quotes, even though as one our charter statements, we do not sell insurance as to give advice on an impartial basis.

Cutcompcosts.com was added in 1999 as it seemed that the earlier one got on board the World Wide Web the better it would be for business.   The blog was started in 2007 after I attended a Network Solutions conference on how to increase web traffic.  Content was key.

At one time, I used to write a pithy article every day including weekends.   Workers Comp is a vast subject.   However, many of my posts could have easily become redundant.   I try to write as much nuts-and-bolts type articles as possible.

There are presently 1,420 posts online in this blog.   I was going to convert the blog to book form until I found out the material would cover 9 – 10 volumes.    I do plan to finish up a book in the near future.20th Year of J&L Risk Management Consultants Logo

I now do press coverage for many conferences including  The NWCDC in Las Vegas

I will be covering the CICA World Captive Conference, Orlando,  and the WCRI Conference over the next two weeks.

Recently, the blog was moved from Blogger to WordPress.  This undertaking was much more of a task than I had originally anticipated as there are still a few kinks to work out overall.

The blog was released in a mobile compliant version last month after receiving the Google warning that the posts were not rendering on smartphones and tablets.

If you see any improvements that might be made to the blog or weekly newsletter, drop me a quick note using the Contact Us blank at the right top of the blog.

Thanks for reading the blog and newsletter.

How JL Risk Management Consultants Is Different Than Our Competitors

April 26, 2008 By JL Risk Management Consultants

The Most Popular Question  on JL Risk Management Consultants Services

The most popular question JL Risk Management Consultants receives is how are we different than our competitors.

Before we go on to the OK analysis of the Compsource bill, I thought it was best to answer the most popular question from our blog readers – this was also blogged on 10/25/07.

Another Question from Our Workers Comp Blog readers – There are a few companies that do Workers Comp premium reviews such as J&L. Do you do anything different than your competitors?

Answer – There are a few things that separate us from our competition. The main two are:

  • Premium Audits/Reviews – I am a former Systems Engineer and programmer. We use homegrown software in doing our premium reviews. We are able to find more inconsistencies or errors in the premiums paid than our competitors. Our software drills down into the Workers Compensation data much further than the packaged software that is on the market as of today. As I have an actuarial/statistical, computer, and claims background, we are able to apply unique models to the data for analysis.

Two Colleagues JL Risk Management Consultants File Documentation

  • Reserve Audits/Reviews – I have a heavy claims background that allows us to initiate a reserve review and a premium review at the same time. No premium review company has this level of expertise in both these areas. Ask one of the premium review companies about reserve reviews and they will usually tell you that they know of someone that they can refer you to in another company or they will refer you to a sub-contractor.

We are able to analyze both areas to the fullest. We start with the premiums paid and work our way back to the E-Mod and then to the reserves on the Workers Comp files. We then analyze the reserves to make sure that the files are reserved properly. We do all of the statistical processes “in-house.”

We have also started doing quite a large number of performance file reviews for larger insureds.
I regret sounding like advertising, but it is the truth. We are not in business to be like the other companies.

J&L Risk Management Consultants Inc – Question From Our Blog Readers

February 10, 2008 By JL Risk Management Consultants

Our Blog Readers Questions on J&L Risk Management Consultants Inc

The Blog Readers question about J&L Risk Management Consultants Inc history. Can you give me a quick history of J&L Risk Management Consultants Inc?

J&L Risk Management Consultants Inc Logo Graphic

Copyright J&L Insurance Consultants Inc

Without sounding like an ad, I started J&L Insurance Consultants, Inc. in 1996. I was originally helping the spinning mills in North Carolina straighten up their Workers Comp claims filings and to help them with their E-Mods. Some of them were disastrous with E-Mods over 2.0. Due to NAFTA and GATT, the spinning mills closed very quickly.

I started noticing that the Workers Comp policies were written incorrectly and had many mistakes on them. I had a heavy statistical background and decided to address and try to correct mistakes in the premium calculations and the reserving of files. What I wanted to offer was an analysis that started at the premiums paid and worked back towards the reserves that caused the E-Mods to change.

As far as I know, we are the only company that offers this service that is not involved with making an agent’s commission. Some companies are great at analyzing one piece of the process, but we are the only ones that have intuitive software for premium calculations and reserving.

Being a former Systems Engineer for a major computer company, I was able to construct software that would enable employers to analyze and cut their Workers Comp Costs. We have found it to be invaluable in helping employers cut their comp costs over time.  We will alter the software to better fit our customer’s needs in the future.

We will add more services as needed by employers, insurance carriers, agents, and other companies in our customer base.   Thanks for reading this article.
