Workers Comp Certs – Why Certificates of Insurance Are Still Critical

The subject of Workers Comp certs is still important today, even in the age of AI.  I was reminded of this when I called into the carrier that J&L uses for certain insurance coverages.  Yes, I had to call as I could not update the info online. One of the phone options was to order Certificates of Insurance.

Workers Comp certs, or just certs, is an acronym for one of the most important Workers Comp old school docs that slip under the radar until they become critical.

Check out this search for the Workers Comp certs on this website.  Let us cover one of the past articles on how to save your company money with subcontractors.

Supplier or Receiver of Certs

Make sure that the Certs are still valid when you receive them.  As a supplier of certs, make sure to provide one to all of your contractors.   The easy method for verifying them is to call the number listed for the Agent at the top and ask if the Workers Comp cert is still valid.  That way, one can avoid stale certs.   If you want to see an example of a cert, see below – courtesy of the state of New York.

One added bonus with this download is that you can easily see the areas that must be completed, or the contractor can see the parts that must be completed.  I recommend calling the Agent listed on the cert.  Using email may cause your inquiry to go into the dreaded Spam folder.

Workers Comp certs or any type of insurance coverage certs can save you headaches later.  Remember that a company can provide a cert on a canceled or old policy that was renewed with another carrier. Think of the task of calling as earning $750 per hour.
