CWCI – Important Workers Comp Info for California WC
What is the CWCI? Find out why their numbers may be telling for the rest of the US. California came out of the pandemic with Workers Comp numbers that varied from most of the US. If you check out this NCCI Conference presentation from 2025, the reported CA numbers varied from the rest of the US.
The California Workers Comp Institute (similar to WCRI) provides Workers Comp research info for California only. Alex Swedlow, former CWCI Director, now retired, provided great presentations as far back as I can remember at many of the conferences that I attended, with great summary numbers.
Upcoming CWCI Conference – Worth It
The CWCI will hold a conference on March 28, 2026, in Sacramento, CA. If your company has CA interests or is looking to expand into CA, I recommend attending the conference as a great way to find out how CA Workers Comp presently performs with a hard look at he future of CA Workers Comp
The price of the one-day annual meeting is $395 for non-members. That is a bargain. If I can make it to the meeting, I will write one or two articles on the CWCI conference.

Paths to Renewal in California’s Workers’ Compensation System
Historically, California’s workers’ compensation system has been shaped by sharp cyclical intervals: specifically, the upheaval of reform, followed by periods of stability, followed by wrenching changes, throwing the system out of balance and beginning the cycle anew. Today, after a long period of stability due to the 2012 reforms, a series of post-pandemic developments, including an increasing number of cumulative trauma claims, signal the approaching end of a cycle of stability and the arrival of a new cycle.
By examining lessons from past reforms and exploring practical paths forward, CWCI’s 2026 Annual Meeting will showcase past work and ongoing research to map out the current landscape and discuss how California’s workers’ compensation system can remain effective and return to stability in the years ahead. Guest speakers and Institute staff will also provide an update on the California economy, as well as current legal and legislative issues that are reshaping the state’s business environment.
