2026 Workers Comp Resolutions – Starting Early

Even though the new Year is a few days away, let us look at the 2026 Workers Comp Resolutions.  These work for employers.  Each one can be easily adapted to anyone in the workers comp industry. See the Bottom Line of this article on how to find more information on this website on fulfilling your 2026 Workers Comp resolutions.

  1. If you have an upcoming policy renewal date, read this article on not renewing at the end of most companies’ fiscal years.
  2. Read your policy or assign someone to do it.  I recommend assigning the task to a college intern and reviewing their findings.  The Declarations Page has more info on it than one might think.
  3. Review your last two premium audits.  Do they look right to you? If not, ask for the premium auditor’s worksheets.
  4. Pull your last three Experience Rating Worksheets from the rating bureau.  NCCI (800-NCCI-123) and the WCIRB (888-CA-WCIRB) cover a large portion of them. Do the claims listed on the worksheets look familiar?
  5. Know your claims adjusters’ names and email addresses. The claims loss run will usually have the adjuster’s name on each claim. Keep them up to date on everything that occurs from the date of injury until the file is closed. Establish a working relationship with your claims staff.
  6. If you do not have online access, then request your Claims Loss Runs at least every quarter.
  7. Start a Return-to-work program that covers light-duty jobs. Give a copy to your employees to eliminate surprises. Establish a job bank.
  8. CRTICAL 2026 Workers Comp Resolution – Establish a medical treatment network. Who are your company’s initial treating physicians or facilities?  Always make sure that any medical provider has a copy of #7.
  9. Safety, Safety, Safety – everyone in the workers comp industry will tell you that keeping your employees from having accidents.  Remember, a loss is called a loss because your company loses work capital when an employee is injured.  Your insurance carrier or TPA (if you are self-insured) has so many ways to help with establishing and maintaining a safety program. I have two business friends who travel around for carriers and make safety recommendations to employers – free of charge.
