Kids Chance – A Great Charitable Organization
Two Weeks Ago, the popularity of the video about Lucy, the heavily disabled (or is she really?) teenager who can stunningly play the piano, caused me to think that I had never written about one of the, if not the main Workers Comp charitable organization – Kids Chance. J&L Risk Management Consultants had donated to the organization when it first started “boothing” at conferences.
History
The first organization was founded in 1988 by workers compensation attorney Robert Clyatt in Valdosta, Georgia. He developed the initiative after having been a direct witness to the dramatic effect that workplace injuries and fatalities can have on families, specifically the hardships it causes with the pursuit of higher education for the children of the injured. After incorporating the inaugural Kids’ Chance group in Georgia, the organization began reaching out to other states to further expand the cause, and now 47 states in the nation have independent Kids’ Chance organizations.
Present and Future
Kids’ Chance gives the kids of workers who have been injured on the job a chance at a better future by providing scholarships and support. Cumulatively, Kids’ Chance organizations have awarded more than 11,000 scholarships, totaling over $42 million dollars.

Every worker’s comp conference that I have attended in the last 15 – 20 years either had a mini-session or a mention of this great organization.

Thank you for recognizing this wonderful organization. As the President-Elect of Kids’ Chance of Florida, I’ve had the privilege of watching our scholarship recipients overcome incredible challenges with resilience and determination. The impact extends beyond the students—it lifts entire families. Being part of an organization that helps open doors to a brighter future has truly been one of the greatest honors of my career.
