AI and Workers Comp Claims Management – Not Yet Convinced

One of the most popular articles written by me on AI and Workers Comp claims management can be found here.

Even though the article was written eight years ago, the same idea still applies to claims management.  Claims adjusters will not be replaced by AI.  The adjusters will use AI as a tool to assist with adjusting claims.

Why would I not agree that technology/AI could forecast a claims outcome by examining certain characteristics?  Everyone heals differently, even when categorized in groups.  The human body remains the most complex system on earth.

In my humble opinion, I have not seen very many claims in my career that resolved similarly to a different claim even if the employer, employee, and injury were very similar.AI and Workers Comp claims management meshing together would likely save a large amount of payouts while more rapidly returning an injured employee to gainful employment.

One of the sessions that caught my eye is scheduled for the first day of the AIS.  I will keep my mind very open on this one.  Why?  Maybe data analyses have reached a point of critical mass where data can predict the outcomes of claims.

NCCI wisely decided to let the attendees hear from the “claims side of things.”  I would have liked to hear from a Senior Claims Adjuster who uses AI and Workers Comp claims daily.  I do appreciate a physician being on the panel.

Watch for my article next week on this session.  I may come away with a different opinion than I have now on AI and workers comp claims management.

Key Component

AI and Workers Comp claims adjustment still possesses one major facet that can reduce workloads for claims staff.  Doe example, when an adjuster receives a phone call or email on the status of a benefit payment – indemnity or medical – they are devoting time that could be better used if AI/technology answered those questions.
