Carrier Study Shows Causes/Costs of Restaurant Worker Injuries
An excellent recent study and report by AmTrust Insurance Company generated surprising results on restaurant worker injuries. The thorough research covered 130,000 claims from 2018 – 2023. A free copy of the report can be found here.
I used to adjust claims for many large restaurant chains and now provide risk management advice to two of the largest restaurant chains in the southern US. One of the best safety measures that I have seen instituted by a restaurant chain was purchasing better slip and fall mats.
The report should be a valuable resource for risk management, safety, and claim departments. Identifying the sources of the most expensive restaurant injuries could also serve as an informal reserving guide. The short report provides great insight that makes it worth a download and a read.
According to AmTrust the study and report covered the following facets of restaurant worker injuries:
- Injuries: Recognize the most common injuries in the restaurant industry
- Expense: Understand which injuries lead to the most expensive claims
- Prevention: Implement targeted prevention strategies to safeguard employees and reduce costs

My Experience with Restuarant Worker Claims
Before I read the report, L listed the most common injury causes and associated costs from my history with Workers Comp claims and risk management with restaurants.
- Most common – knife injuries, slip and falls, burns
- Most serious – slip and falls
- Very expensive – fractured hip, legs, and arms from falls
The Anthem Study provided almost the same results with one surprise finding that risk managers should heavily consider when trying to reduce injury costs.
Restaurant Worker Injuries – Never Thought of This
According to the study the top most expensive injuries comprise just 1% of total claims. I was not expecting this result whatsoever. Check the link at the top of the article. To be fair to Anthem, I will let you read the most expensive claims with restaurant worker injuries. I was shocked.
